Fish curry with ground coconut / Thenga aracha Meencurry

Keeping things simple should be our way of life. This would make it so much easier to appreciate and enjoy life not just for ourselves but for all. I hope that every single person wishes good for every other being making this world a better place to live...

Philosophy aside, I would like you all to give this really simple and easy fish curry recipe a try! I have prepared this quite often at home but rarely got around  to taking a snap of the dish :) I have a traditional 'meen chatti' (earthen pot) handed over by my amma to me, which I always make use whilst making this dish :D

We use similar coconut ground mixture while preparing toor dal (parippu) curry with fried shallots and curry leaves garnish. This was sort of my staple food during school days (slurp!!)... and it is yet to make way to my little space here.

Fish curry with ground coconut in earthenware / Thenga aracha Meencurry

Ingredients:

500 g Fish, cleaned and cut into pieces
Small piece Ginger, finely chopped
1/2 cup Grated coconut
Few Cumin seeds
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
Salt, to taste
Water, as required
2 Green chillies, slit lengthwise
1 Tomato, roughly sliced
Few Curry leaves

Method:
  • Tip in the cleaned fish pieces along with little salt and turmeric powder in an earthen pot or any pot with enough water to cook the fish.
  • Cover and cook for few mins and add the slit green chillies.
  • Meanwhile grind the grated coconut, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, salt with water (as required) to a smooth paste.
  • Add the ground coconut mixture to the fish and add the sliced tomatoes too.
  • Let the whole mixture boil for few mins until the tomatoes gets cooked well.
  • Add the curry leaves, taste and adjust salt as preferred.
  • Remove from fire.
Notes: I have prepared this curry many a times with trout,  salmon, mackerel and so on. I love to use the earthen pot ('meen chatti') for this preparation as traditionally used back home :) Best enjoyed with a share of Kerala 'puttu' or fluffy rice and a veggie side!
